Mini Golf
Mini golf is a miniature version of golf. It is also known as miniature golf, adventure golf, crazy golf, goofy golf and so on. The term Putt-Putt is a registered trademark of a miniature golf company but is also commonly used to describe the sport in general. Mini golf is a great entertainment activity that can be played by people of all ages.
Mini golf is recognized as a sport in its own right, distinct from golf. It is played at competition levels around the world. Organizations such as the World Minigolf Sport Federation, US Pro Mini-Golf Association and the British Open International Minigolf Tournament organize championships that help spread the popularity of mini golf.
Mini golf became popular in the late 1910s and early 1920s as a means for golf fanatics to replicate major golf courses on a small scale. The game was then called “garden golf” and was played with a putter on grass. The first mini golf course was “Thistle Dhu” conceptualized by James Barber. It opened in 1916 in Pinehurst, North Carolina. Thomas McCulloch Fairbairn revolutionized the game in 1922 with his formulation of artificial greens. By the early 1940s, Joe and Bob Taylor started building miniature landscaped golf courses with highly imaginative obstacles such as windmills, castles, wishing wells, miniature models of buildings and monuments.
Today, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina is considered the “Mini Golf Capital of the World” with over fifty courses in the city center alone. Florida comes second with its elaborate Disney-themed mini golf courses.
