Men Rules

From its inception as a major sport, golf has produced great male golfers who have become legendary.  Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Tiger Woods… These names have become synonymous with golf.  Along with the popularity of men’s golf, it has become a lucrative career option.  Famous men golfers have amassed millions from playing golf.

Jack Nicklaus, an American golfer, is widely regarded as the greatest golfer of all times.  He was the first player to win all four of golf’s major titles at least twice.  His record of eighteen wins – three Open Championships, four US Opens, Five PGA Championships and six Masters is as yet unmatched.  Nicklaus is one of only five golfers to win a career “grand slam” – four current majors in a career.  He is the only golfer in history to win all four majors at least three times.

Arnold Palmer, an American golfer, was the first player to win The Masters tournament four times – 1958, 1960, 1962 and 1964.  He won The US Open in 1960 and The Open Championship in 1961 and 1962. His successive wins in The Open encouraged American professional players to travel all the way to UK to play at The Open.  From 1960 to 1963, he won twenty-nine PGA Tour events. His charisma and daring playing style attracted a huge crowd of supporters called “Arnie’s Army”.  His appealing personality was a major factor in making golf a popular television sport.  In 1967, he became the first man to attain one million dollars in career earnings on the PGA Tour.

Gary Player, a South African player, is one of the most successful golfers in the history of the sport.  Along with Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus, they are referred to as the “Big Three” golfers of their era – the era when golf flourished in the US and around the world due to widespread television coverage.  He joins the elite club of “grand slam” winners along with Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods, a feat he completed in 1965. Gary Player is the only golfer in the 20th Century to win The British Open in three different decades.

Eldrick “Tiger” Woods, an Asian-American golfer, is currently ranked as the number one golf player in the world.  He is much admired for his brilliant plays, long accurate drives, great composure and competitive intensity.  He has won ten majors, all before reaching the age of thirty.  Tiger Woods came closest to winning all the four majors in one season also known as “grand slam” when he won consecutively across two seasons – The 2000 US Open, Open Championship and PGA Championship and the 2001 Masters.  This feat has been called “Tiger Slam”. He is the youngest golfer to complete a “grand slam”.  The year 2006 was the most financially rewarding year of his career earning nearly $99 million.  In his first eleven seasons on tour (1996-2006), Tiger Woods has earned almost $650 million. He is undoubtedly golf’s top money-earner.

Vijay Singh, a Fijian, won nine victories including his second PGA Championships in 2004.  In the same year, he became the first player to win more than $10,000,000 in a single season.  He also stayed on top of the official World Golf Rankings for a total of thirty-two weeks, spanning 2004 and 2005.  Vijay Singh recently won the 2007 Mercedes-Benz Championship held in Kapalua Golf Club, Hawaii.  In 1998, he won his first PGA Championship in a two-stroke victory.  He captured his second major at The Masters in 2000.
