Day-to-day Golf Cart Storage
Golf carts are an important source of revenue for any golf course. They are also critical to the successful functioning of the course. The standard tips for golf cart storage and protection are given below:
- A secure building should be provided for golf cart storage.
- Building ventilation should be provided as follows:
- Provide mechanical ventilation that provides at least 4 air changes per hour within the cart storage, refueling and/or recharging areas. Fuels for both gas and electric carts present a significant exposure and fire hazard if not properly handed and protected. Gasoline produces heavier than air vapors that can travel a great distance and remain highly susceptible to ignition.
- Battery recharging operations produce hydrogen gas that is lighter than air and is highly volatile. Not only is it important to eliminate potential ignition sources where these vapors can accumulate, but also to provide adequate ventilation to remove or dilute the volatility of the vapors.
- Motors and electrical wiring that can be exposed to vapor accumulation areas must be explosion proof.
- Battery chargers should be grounded and the wiring should be frequently inspected for broken or worn insulation.
- The golf cart storage facility should be kept clean. Flammable and combustible materials must not be allowed to accumulate.
- "No Smoking" signs should be posted and the rule should be strictly enforced.
- If a storage building is not available, golf carts should be linked together with heavy gauge chains and padlocks. Security lighting should also be installed.
- Keys should not be left in the carts when they are stored. Keys should be locked over night in a separate building or a secure storage area in the cat storage facility.
- Consider installation of an automatic sprinkler system, smoke detectors or a heat detection and burglar alarm system with central station supervision.
